Sun Life Financial Philippines is stepping up its health and wellness efforts by mounting the Sun Life 5150 Triathlon in Naga, Cebu this April 28, 2019.
The 5150 triathlon, which consists of a 1.5 kilometer swim, 40 kilometer bike, and a 10 kilometer run, is the largest international distance triathlon series in the world. It offers a competitive platform for professional and age group athletes, while also serving as an introductory race for those looking to budding triathletes.
“At Sun Life, we aim to provide Filipinos different avenues to enrich their health and wellness journey, whether they are already deep into their fitness goals or are just discovering their passion for it,” Sun Life Chief Marketing Officer Mylene Lopa said. “Sun Life 5150 perfectly exemplifies that purpose, and this is why we are thrilled to be sponsoring this event.”
Sun Life 5150 is organized by Sunrise Events, Inc., the same group behind the successful Ironman triathlon races in the country.
Among those who will join the race are Sun Life’s very own ambassadors, including Piolo Pascual, Enchong Dee, and Inigo Pascual. The three will participate in the relay category under the Sun Life Tri-Team.
Piolo, a regular participant in the Ironman races, will be handling the bike leg for his team. His teammates include Olympian swimmer Jessie Lacuna and seasoned Ironman runner Toniel Ty.
Meanwhile, Enchong and Inigo will be joined by Raphael Ty. Enchong, a former National Swim Team member, will handle the swim course; Inigo, like his dad Piolo, will be on the bike; while Raphael, as with his dad Toniel, will also be in charge of the run course.
Sun Life’s very own employees will likewise join the event. Sun Life Business Development Managers Herbert Juaneza and Hilario Malapad, Sun Life Sales Training & Development Head Ged Custodia, and Sun Life Training Manager Aslagan Cuyugan – all of them seasoned athletes and Ironman finishers – will race in the individual category.
“We’re proud to have our very own ambassadors and employees joining the race and championing our health and wellness thrust. We hope that they inspire Filipinos to pursue —their own goals,” Lopa said. “Sun Life is here to help them see it through. We have a wellness program, GoWell, that they can join and product solutions like Sun Fit and Well to address their health needs. We are ready to be their lifetime partner in this journey.”

A forrner National Team swimmer, Enchong was inspired to create Handog Palangoy three years ago to help children survive disasters like flash floods. “Basic techniques and water safety education can save lives. We have to empower the Filipino youth so they can secure themselves in times of calamities,” he said. “I’m thankful to the Sun Life Foundation for the support.”
A total of 40 kids under the non-government organization Feed the Children will be joining Handog Palangoy. Joining Enchong as coach are seasoned athletes who are part of the Sun Life Tri-Team, including Olympian swimmer Jessie Lacuna, Sun Life Business Development Managers Herbert Juaneza and Hilario Malapad, Sun Life Sales Training & Development Head Ged Custodia, and Sun Life Training Manager Aslagan Cuyugan.
Handog Palangoy has taught over 3,000 children in its past eight legs, with Sun Life
Foundation a partner in the past two. Sun Life Foundation is the philanthropic arm of Sun Life Financial, Philippines.
“At Sun Life, we believe that preparation is key to a brighter future, especially with the many surprises that life may throw our way. This is perfectly exemplified in Handog Palangoy and by Enchong’s cause,” said Kristine Millete, Executive Director of Sun Life Foundation. “We are proud to support this event and look forward to working closely with Enchong to further this advocacy.”
