Robredo Sides With Rappler And Says The Country Needs Them As Watchdogs Against The Administration

A few days ago, SEC released an order stopping Rappler on its tracks. After that, Rappler went on and blamed the president for targeting them and ordering SEC to do that for them to stop.

However, Duterte allies have been explaining that it was not the president who asked the SEC chairman to look into the case of Rappler. It was SEC’s decision and Rappler really had violated some rules.

Moreover, even the president himself vented out on what he was feeling about the allegations.

On the other hand, the Philippines’ Vice President Leni Robredo also had her say about the issue. When asked about it, she said that what happened might breed fear from people about the concern in the freedom of press and freedom of expression.

She also added that the media is needed in the country in order to guard the officials that are taking advantage of their positions.

The media, in her opinion should be the one watching these advantageous plot by people in power.

Though what she said made sense, it is important to note that SEC did not close down the media, it closed down Rappler, a publishing company allegedly posting as a part of the media, but in reality has no right to give news for the Philippines according to the constitution.

When asked if she believes that Duterte didn’t specifically want to shut down Rappler, she said it is hard to comment because she wasn’t the one who heard it.
